4. People and document search

Search of heirs and verifying identity

Lawyers may obtain our experts’ services when searching for heirs or verifying their identities.

Should the deceased have direct living descendants (children, grandchildren, great grandchildren), they rank ahead any other heirs. If there are no direct living descendants the search is extended a generation back.

  • One generation: the research comprises the deceased’s parents, siblings and their descendants (nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces, etc.). If this research does not find any living relatives, it moves a generation back.
  • Two generations: the research comprises the deceased’s grandparents and their descendants (the deceased’s aunts and uncles, cousins, etc.) We investigate both sets of grandparents, maternal and paternal. If there are no living heirs to be found in this generation, the research moves yet another generation back.
  • Three generations: this research comprises the deceased’s great grand parents and their descendants. Research of the third generation is extremely rare since most surveys end with the second generation. However, Gens Historia perseveres in surveys of this kind until the closest living heir is found.

Document search

If you need a specific document or set of documents and you cannot go to the archive or library yourself, one of our experts can do it for you. We can provide official copies or notarizations for documents such as birth, baptism/christening, marriage, divorce and death certificates. Our experts are at your disposal even for substantial amounts of documents in cases of research for graduate, master’s and doctoral theses as well as other expert researches. Documents can be translated into various languages.

5. Transcription of gothic cursive and translation of documents

Austrian chronicleBefore the fall of the Habsburg monarchy the state and church documents in Slovenian territory were mostly written in German, mainly in Gothic cursive writing. Printed Gothic script is not challenging to read, whereas Gothic cursive is a bit more complicated due to several letters looking similar to each other, as well as the penmanship of each writer itself. Because of the writing amateur genealogist many times can not manage further research of their family past. This is why at Gens Historia we now offer the transcript of documents from Gothic Cursive to Latin script. If there is also a problem of understanding German language, we also now offer a translation and explanation of the origin of each document.
